C Programmer's Guide to Serial Communication
@ US$31.96
Revises and updates the first edition of 1987. An intermediate-to- advanced reference, leaning to the advanced,
about asynchronous serial communications as it is found on microcomputers. The first section presents the
theoretical and practical background information required to understand the objectives of the programming
section. Using the first section as a backdrop, the second section develops the programming tools to accomplish
everyday serial programming chores. The programming examples are in C. A companion diskette is available.

Parallel Port Complete: Programming, Interfacing & Using the PC'S Parallel Printer Port
@ US$31.96
chipm@netusa1.net from Kokomo, IN , 03/15/98, rating=10: Very thorough and informative.....good job as usual for
Jan. I have read Jan's columns for years in various electronics magazines and papers. She does not disappoint in
this book. She presents the subject of PC interfacing very thoroughly and with much detail. Her use of Visual
Basic was important so that the book would appeal and be usable to the most widest audience possible. Not everyone
is a C programmer so I think the book would be useful to all. The book cleared up many concepts for me. Very well
written... by Jan Axelson
Programming the Parallel Port: Interfacing the PC for Data Acquisition and Process Control
@ US$35.96
martinc@cs.athabascau.ca from Athabasca, Canada , 04/21/98, rating=10: What your PC must do to sieze the world by
the bits. This very up-to-date handbook reveals little-known secrets of PC hardware and the software needed to
control the outside world with a PC. Suitable background in electronics is given for the book to be used as a
textbook, yet the approach is that of a helpful cookbook. Going beyond the PC, the important topic of
microcontrollers is addressed. Best of all, important problems in data measurement using PCs can be addressed with
very inexpensive hardware easily built (a complete novice might need a Radio Shack style guide to how to do
soldering). Software is included in source code form on disk, an added bonus. Reading this book won't get you an
EE degree but it might be the next best thing... by Dhananjay V. Gadre

USB Design by Example: A Practical Guide to Building I/O Devices
@ US$49.99
The only hands-on guide to designing and implementing USB devices.
USB (Universal Serial Bus) is a new peripheral interconnect standard that was developed through a cooperative
computer industry initiative and now appears on all personal computers, desktop and laptop, shipped today. The
list of features of USB is long and impressive but when you try to discover HOW "hot-plug" or "automatic device
recognition and configuration" is implemented you discover that you have to read and understand... by John Hyde
USB Hardware & Software
@ US$94.95
This book describes the hardware, software, device, bus, and host controller details of the Universal
Serial Bus version 1.0. Our desire has been to expand on the technical information presented in the
official specification. We expect that you have a copy of the official specification, which should be
considered the final word on correct and required bus, device, and host controller behavior.
The focus of this book is to address the needs of developers creating USB device hardware/firmware...

Provides complete coverage of all PC interface methods including Parallel Port, Serial Port (RS-232),
I/O busses (ISA, PCI, IDE and SCSI), and the new USB. Includes experiments and practical "projects" along
with theoretical discussions of how different interfaces operate. Source code for all experiments provided
in 8086 assembler, Visual Basic, Visual C++, and LabView. Thorough coverage of creating Device Drivers
including Dynamic Link Libraries (DLLs) & Virtual Device Drivers (VxDs).... by Michael Predko, Myke Predko
Controlling the World With Your PC
@ US$28.00
Reviewer by : Ross Bolton from Santa Ana, CA
This book goes straight in to code, no connections or words about interface. Although he has lots of projects
and lots of code, including a disk, unless you know how to use cable connections from board to PC or PC to
whatever you are trying to control (he has a motor project) then you will be wasting your time with it. If
you are adventurous or know how to connect, then the book is generally pretty good. Has 40 projects which
vary quite a bit and the circuit schematics for some projects also. But definitely not for a beginner.
